The interior terrain is mainly flat plateaus rising northward to the Adamawa highlands and then gradually descending to the northern Lake Chad lowlands. The west is dominated by volcanic mountains towered near the coast by Mt. Cameroon, an active volcano and the highest elevation in West Africa. The southern plateaus are covered in rain forest, descending toward vast coastal plains.
